Somatic Experiencing®
Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) is a body-centered approach to healing trauma and chronic stress created by Peter A. Levine. It is based on the understanding that trauma is not only a psychological event but also a physiological experience that lives in the nervous system. SE™ gently works with the nervous system, helping the body complete survival responses that may have been interrupted during overwhelming experiences.
Trauma is not just what happened to you.
It’s what got stuck in your nervous system.
When something overwhelming occurs, your body automatically shifts into survival mode. Your heart rate changes. Muscles tense up. Breathing becomes shallower. Your system prepares to fight, flee, or freeze. Somatic Experiencing helps release that stuck activation so you can feel more present, regulated, and fully yourself.
Somatic Experiencing®
Somatic Experiencing® for Couples
In relationships, nervous systems interact constantly. Many conflicts arise not from incompatibility but from mutual dysregulation.
When one partner mobilizes (fight/flight), and the other shuts down (freeze/collapse), the cycle escalates.
Somatic Experiencing® for couples helps partners:
Recognize their own nervous system patterns
Identify activation in real time
Slow reactive cycles
Increase co-regulation
Build embodied safety together
When both nervous systems feel safer, communication becomes clearer, and connection deepens naturally.
Is Somatic Experiencing® Right for You?
If you are ready to move beyond insight alone and into embodied healing, SE™ may be a powerful next step.
SE™ honors the intelligence of your nervous system and supports lasting change, not just symptom management, but transformation.
Symptoms are not a pathology.
Changes That May Occur
As the nervous system restores its natural rhythm, clients often report:
Feeling grounded and present rather than anxious
Increased emotional flexibility
Improved sleep
Reduced startle response
Greater clarity in decision-making
Increased capacity for intimacy
A felt sense of safety that was previously unfamiliar
You may notice the body’s innate capacity for self-regulation and restored resiliency. Energy becomes available for vitality, connection, creativity, and purpose.
How Somatic Experiencing® Works
Your nervous system is designed to move through stress and return to balance. When overwhelm is too intense or prolonged, that cycle can become interrupted.
Somatic Experiencing® works by:
Tracking subtle body sensations
Building awareness of internal states
Gently titrating difficult experiences (small, manageable pieces at a time)
Strengthening your capacity to stay present
Supporting completion of fight, flight, or freeze responses
Unlike exposure-based approaches, SE™ does not require reliving traumatic events. Healing happens through nervous system regulation, not re-traumatization.
Over time, your system learns that it is safe to settle.
Somatic Experiencing® for Individuals
In individual SE™ sessions, we slow down and track what arises moment-to-moment in your body. We slowly unwind the nervous system’s attempt to protect you, helping the body safely renegotiate the survival response into a state of regulation.
You may notice:
A tightening in the chest
A subtle urge to move
A shift in breathing
A wave of heat or trembling
A stillness or numbness
